Community Orchard@Bagley, Ltd

Welcome to Bagley’s little bit of heaven, the orchard is situated in Snake Lane, Bagley about a quarter of a mile west of the ‘Old School’.

We started negotiating with Sedgemoor in 2003 to get permission to turn a piece of wasteland into an orchard. Agreement was secured in 2007, we have a 25 year lease.

We achieved charitable status in 2006. The Orchard is run by a committee of Bagley residents who meet on a regular basis and work hard to keep it looking beautiful all year round.

There was a huge amount of effort from many local people who helped with fund raising and supplied muscle to clear the site and plant trees, shrubs and flowers, which resulted in the working orchard that you see today.

We have apple, pear, plum greengage, meddler, crab apple, wild cherry, spindle, wayfarer, ash and cob nut trees and a lovely range of wild flowers including primrose, cowslips, bluebells, snakehead fritillary are among the 60+ species identified so far. There is also a wide range of fungi. Bird and bat boxes are in use and we feed the birds in the winter.

Two benches have been donated and a picnic bench has been purchased. We won a grant to erect a Gazebo this year, which has been planted with ivy and honeysuckle.

The orchard is used by many people; this year Wedmore W.I. had a picnic lunch and the combined churches of Bagley and Theale had a dawn Easter Gathering, the Community Orchard had a musical picnic to help raise some funds. We talk to a lot of people who use the orchard as a stopping place on their way through.

The Orchard is open to everyone and we welcome anyone who would like to have an event there, if you haven’t visited us yet, come and see our glorious views of the West Front of the Cathedral, the Mendips, the levels and the Poldens and of course Glastonbury Tor.
